Ayasofya Hotel Istanbul was originally built in the 19th Century as 3 private Ottoman homes in the traditional wooden style. It fell into rack and ruin over the ensuring 100 years
In 1990 it was restored and opened as a Special Historic Class Hotel and since then has offered true Turkish hospitality to guests from all over the world. In April 2009 an Australian woman from Melbourne, Gaye Reeves, took over the hotel and has upgraded the comforts in the rooms and enhanced this beautiful old Ottoman building.
Nestled beneath the ancient walls of the Hippodrome known as the Splendone, the hotel is just 300 metres downhill from the Hippodrome and Blue Mosque. Hagia Sophia, the Bacilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, Grand Bazaar and the tram line are all just a short walk away.
But what makes our hotel unique is its location. Set in a small cobblestoned street among a local community, not only are you close to all the wonderful Byzantium and Ottoman monuments you also have the experience of being part of a local community during your stay.
Our local farmers market is nearby on a Wednesday, street peddlers pass by and our neighbours gossip from their windows.
You feel like you are part of the real Istanbul and not just a tourist! Our hotel is welcoming, friendly and we believe unique in our service, ambience and location.
The best compliment we so often receive from our guests is that after a long day sightseeing in the hussle and bussle of the Old City it feels like coming home
